Contains correspondence from the editorial offices of the Journal of Religion and its two predecessors, The Biblical World and the American Journal of Theology. Records of The Biblical World (1915-1921) consist primarily of correspondence of the editor, Shailer Mathews. Records of the American Journal of Theology (1915-1921) consist of letters of the journal's two managing editors, Gerald Smith and Shirley Jackson Case. These two journals merged in 1921 under the title Journal of Religion with Gerald Smith as editor (1921-1926). Subsequent editors were Shirley J. Case (1926-1939), John Knox (1939-1943), John T. McNeill (1944), Amos N. Wilder (1944-1946), and Bernard E. Meland and James H. Nichols (1947-1950). Later records include correspondence 1920-1939 and 1944-1950. Only the first half of the alphabet (A-L) for 1948-1950 is available.

Shailer Mathews was born in Portland, Maine on May 26, 1863. He received an A.B. from Colby College in 1884, and an M.A. in 1887 In the latter year, he also graduated from Newton Theological Seminary, after which he spent a number of years as a professor at Colby.
